Teddy Klaus, Music Director
This spring marks Teddy Klaus’s 20th year as the Music Director at Temple Micah where he oversees the musical life of the synagogue. He conducts the choirs and instrumentalists, plays the piano, teaches music in the religious school, and tutors the B’nai Mitzvah students. He delights in transmitting our Jewish musical heritage and enjoys writing new music for the synagogue.
Teddy has written music for many Washington, DC area dance companies. He has received commissions from the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, CrossCurrents Dance Company, and Baltimore Gas and Electric Company, among others. Teddy directed the music for the Catholic University production of Joshua Sobel’s Ghetto, directed by the playwright. He currently serves on the Board of CrossCurrents Dance Company.
Teddy is a past-President of the Guild of Temple Musicians. The Guild is a national organization of music directors, organists, composers, and singers. He has served on the board of the American Conference of Cantors, the Joint Commission of Synagogue Music of the URJ, and Transcontinental Music Publications.
Born in New Jersey, Teddy received a B.A. in music and physics from Wesleyan University. In graduate school, he studied music theory and conducting at the University of Michigan’s School of Music.
Teddy lives in Bethesda with the other loves of his life: his wife Debby and their 16-year old son, Aaron and 9-year old daughter, Lila.
